In this course, students work on developing skills for writing summaries, reviews and essays that are well organized and coherently developed. Russian Courses

 

The focus of this beginner’s course is on the development of communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing as well as on the introduction to the culture of the Russian-speaking world.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • communicate in the areas of the various topics covered (family, living spaces, studies, day-to-day living, etc.)
  • converse in Russian using correct grammar and pronunciation
  • ask and answer simple questions
  • demonstrate understanding of simple spoken language
  • write correctly in simple Russian sentences
  • answer questions about and/or summarize the content of simple Russian written passages
  • incorporate information learned about Russian culture into their coursework

German Courses

 

DEUTSCH 1 (German for Beginners) is intended for students with no previous knowledge of the German language.

By the end of the course students will be able to employ simple sentences and expressions when dealing with various situations in daily life (at the supermarket, in public offices, at the doctor’s, at the office) and especially when expressing wishes and attending to personal needs in and around the university. Furthermore, they will be able to talk about themselves and their areas of study and ask others about personal details, work, hobbies, and interests. Go to course page.


Japanese Courses

 

This course aims to provide students with an introductory knowledge of spoken and written Japanese.

Acquisition of basic grammar, hiragana, katakana, & kanji scripts, and oral communication skills will be emphasized. General knowledge of Japanese people and their culture will also be introduced in the context of language learning. Go to course page.

 

This course aims to further develop students’ spoken and written discourse skills in Japanese.

Acquisition of intermediate grammar, kanji scripts, and oral communication skills will be emphasized. As language is to the large extent shaped by culture, aspects of Japanese people and their culture will also be discussed in the context of language learning. Students will learn an additional 80 kanji in this course. The goal is to advance toward completion of the first 500 kanji; you will have studied about 300 by the end of this term.
