This course aims to provide students with an introductory knowledge of spoken and written Japanese. Acquisition of basic grammar, hiragana, katakana, & kanji scripts, and oral communication skills will be emphasized. General knowledge of Japanese people and their culture will also be introduced in the context of language learning.
Note: Japanese 1 spans 12 weeks of instruction and consists of four three-week-long modules. Successful completion of all four modules is necessary to progress to the next level.

This course aims to provide you with basic spoken and written discourse skills in Japanese. Acquisition of elementary grammar, kana/kanji scripts, and oral communication skills will be emphasized. As language is to the large extent shaped by culture, aspects of Japanese people and their culture will also be discussed in the context of language learning. You will learn hiragana and katakana, in addition to about 100 kanji in this course. By the end of the course, the students should be able to speak/write at basic level and be able to read simple materials and understand everyday basic conversations.
Oxford Starter Dictionary or any of the following: Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary (Kodansha) and Furigana English-Japanese Dictionary (Kodansha) The latter choices will be more useful for those students who plan to continue to study at higher levels.

Class attendance is mandatory and attendance will be taken at every class.
